In 2002, a family sued acne-treatment brand Accutane for causing their 15-year-old son to commit suicide, alleging that the drug must have “poisoned” him. Accutane is the brand-name for isotretinoin, a drug used to treat acne with serious side effects. Though the 2002 case was dropped in 2007, many scientists have continued to research the link between isotretinoin and depression. Researchers used a public database to scan for adverse mental health effects in patients using isotretinoin between 1997 and 2017, and found some surprising results. The bulk of the complaints discussed depression and suicidal ideation, but surprisingly, a significant amount of the patients complained of anxiety, self-harm, and insomnia.
